Unfortunately, the leading causes of death in the United States are adverse drug reactions. Prescription drugs lead to more than 100,000 deaths annually, and more than 1.5 million cases of people are hospitalized with serious side effects.
The following three classes of prescription drugs lead to many cognitive problems, including memory loss:
Sleeping pills often lead to memory loss and cause coma or drunkenness. Therefore, it does not restore the sleep that the body needs to repair itself.
For example, Ambien, a popular drug, is known as the “amnesia drug” because it leads to hallucinations, night terrors, sleepwalking and sleep driving.
These drugs are among the most harmful to the brain and are used to regulate cholesterol levels. This is due to the fact that ¼ of the brain consists of cholesterol, which is necessary for thinking, memory and learning. However, they also cause memory loss and similar adverse effects.
All “counter” medications, such as antihistamines, antibiotics, antidepressants, antipsychotics, anticonvulsants, or antihypertensives affect levels of acetylcholine in the body, the main neurotransmitter needed for memory and learning.
Its low levels cause blurred vision, memory loss, dementia, delirium, mental confusion, and hallucinations.
Richard C. Moss, former vice chair of psychiatry at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, has authored the following list of 20 medications that cause memory loss:
Sleeping pills – Ambien, Lunesta, Sonata
Painkillers – morphine, codeine, heroin
Epilepsy – Dilantin or Phenytoin
Barbiturates – Nembutal, Phenobarbital, Seconal, Amytal
Antipsychotics – Melaryl, Haldol
Parkinson’s disease – atropine, glycopyrrolate, scopolamine
Benzodiazepines – Xanax, Valium, Dalmane, Ativan
High blood pressure medications
If you are using these medications, you should consult your doctor and see if they affect your memory. You can always find a healthy alternative, at least other medications or lifestyle changes.
You should be more physically active, take some supplements, and eat some foods that are good for the brain, in order to reduce the burden on it.
You have to keep your brain healthy to stay alert and healthy in general.
